Netflix’s first Brazilian original medical series, MED, has been announced during Rio2C 2026. The project stars Clara Moneke and is produced by Paranoid Studios, the team behind Criminal Code.
MED is sure to be a game changer for Netflix in Brazil. Hospital dramas are some of the most popular TV shows on Netflix globally. Brazilian originals are mostly centered around crime and thriller so it will be interesting to see how MED does. If Netflix can successfully branch out in Brazil, they may take this strategy global and produce more medical dramas in regions like Korea, Japan, or India.

Brazilian shows are currently seeing more international traction than ever before. Netflix also announced that Brazilian shows saw a 60% increase in viewing from the same time last year. Streaming audiences from all over the world are clearly interested in watching stories from Brazil that they can relate to.
MED will not be the only original genre that Netflix experiments with in Brazil. Netflix also announced a documentary that follows sailor Tamara Klink on her solo expedition to the Arctic. Produced by Maria Farinha Filmes, this documentary will allow Netflix to try something new. They also announced a melodrama directed by Rogério Gomes, also known as Papinha.
Netflix is also still going strong with comedy. Os Crentes was also announced at the conference as well as a comedy that follows a couple in an open marriage. This widens Netflix’s scope as they can now produce content for multiple niches.
Netflix recently announced that they are building a headquarters in Brazil. They have made it clear that they plan to continue producing content in Brazil and other Latin American countries for the foreseeable future. Other titles in production include Radioactive Emergency, Brasil 70, and an adaptation of Paulo Coelho’s The Pilgrimage.

“The strength and diversity of these productions demonstrate the stories that are being created in Brazil,” says Elisabetta Zenatti, Vice President of Content for Netflix Brazil. The opportunity to keep working with these brilliant minds is something we’re really looking forward to.
With MED, Netflix is clearly positioning Brazil as more than a regional production hub — it is becoming a key creative engine for international streaming entertainment.
