Award-winning editor Marcia Lucas — best known for her pioneering work editing Star Wars and other Hollywood classics — has died. Lucas died Thursday at age 80 while surrounded by loved ones at her home in Rancho Mirage, California. The cause of death was metastatic cancer.

Editors often work behind-the-scenes but remain some of the most important figures in movie-making. The creative decisions they make in assembling a film often make or break a final product. Marcia Lucas was among the greatest of them all. Her family called her a “trailblazer for women in film” and one of Hollywood’s most impactful editors.
Lucas was born Martha Griffin on October 4, 1945, in Modesto, California. Before learning to love editing films, she worked as a film librarian. Lucas found work with many of Hollywood’s biggest names including Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, and others.
Her big break was editing American Graffiti in 1973. Directed by George Lucas, the coming-of-age film was a major success and earned Lucas her first Academy Award nomination for Best Film Editing. American Graffiti also solidified Marcia Lucas as one of Hollywood’s most talented editors.

However, her most acclaimed work came just four years later with Star Wars. Also known as Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, Lucas received an Academy Award for Best Film Editing for her work on the film alongside editors Paul Hirsch and Richard Chew. Many have credited Lucas with saving Star Wars through her keen emotional instincts as a storyteller.
Marcia Lucas went on to work with some of Hollywood’s biggest directors on films like Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Taxi Driver, New York, New York, and Return of the Jedi. Her ability to cut emotion into stories was praised by many.
Survivors include her daughters Amanda Lucas and Amy Soper, grandchildren and family. Lucas mostly avoided the spotlight during her career and in her retirement but will be remembered for forever shaping movies that fans around the world know and love today.
