Ryan Lochte and Kayla Rae Reid have officially divorced after eight years of marriage. However, a recent interview shines more light on how things really ended between the former couple. Reid opened up on what really went on behind closed doors citing infidelity issues from her husband, substance abuse allegations and loss of trust.
Why Did Kayla Rae Reid File for Divorce?
Kayla says the issues in her marriage did not spring up from one incident. She says she caught evidence of her husband cheating several times including while she was pregnant with their youngest child.
She also talked about an incident that occurred earlier in their relationship in which photos of Ryan surfaced on his phone showing him hugging another woman from behind. Kayla says he lied to her face when she called him out for cheating. Then in 2023 she caught him cheating while pregnant with their daughter Georgia. She went on to say she saw another selfie on his phone of him with a female gym buddy.
Kayla states that instead of immediately filing for divorce she blamed herself and dealt with feelings of shame and guilt.
Lochte’s Accident Added More Pressure
While the two were already struggling, Lochte was in a severe car accident in May 2023 while reportedly driving to pick up their kids from school. Lochte spent months recovering from the accident and was bedridden for most of that time.
Kayla said she shouldered most of the responsibility after the accident. This includes handling most of the financial responsibilities during his recovery. She added that the accident was another stressful situation they had to deal with.
Substance Use Became a Major Turning Point
More issues surfaced in 2024 when Kayla claims to have found cocaine in her daughter Liv’s room. She also claims she caught Lochte inhaling nitrous oxide in front of one of their daughters.
It is important to note that these are Kayla’s allegations and not proven facts. According to PEOPLE, Lochte admitted to using drugs but denied using them around his kids.
Fast forward to January 2025 and Kayla claims to have given Lochte 30 days to complete inpatient treatment and marriage counseling. She says he refused to do rehab and soon after she contacted a lawyer to file for divorce.
Lochte and Reid finalized their divorce on July 1, 2026, and Reid was granted primary custody of their three children.
What Has Ryan Lochte Said?
Lochte recently released a statement via social media which read;
“I know I’ve made mistakes along the way and I was never ready to be the husband and father my kids and wife deserve. I don’t plan on sitting here and responding to every false allegation people try to throw my way.”
Lochte followed up with another statement addressing privacy during their divorce.
“I will not let this divorce turn into some reality show where my family and I drag each other through the mud. I pushed for confidentiality not to hide things from you but to protect my children.”
The Bigger Picture
The real story here is that infidelity and mistrust can damage a marriage over time whether celebrities or an average Joe. As for Lochte, he’s taking accountability for his actions and wants to protect his children.
Take away from this story is that there are two sides. Yes, we read Kayla’s side but we do not have proven facts that Lochte did in fact do the things she’s accusing him of.
