Iker Casillas has enjoyed one of the most decorated careers in football history. The former Spain goalkeeper won multiple Champions League titles with Real Madrid, not to mention major trophies with the Spain National Football Team. However, he is in the headlines today for his multimillion euro battle over his early retirement from football, linked to heart problems during the pandemic.

From Football Icon to Courtroom Testimony
Casillas enjoyed over 20 years as one of football’s top goalies. He won three UEFA Champions League titles with Real Madrid and helped lead Spain through a period of domination from 2008 to 2012. This included two European Championships in 2008 and 2012 as well as the 20 countries First FIFA World Cup.
However, during a training session with FC Porto in May of 2019, Casillas suffered a heart attack. This put him on long-term absence from the sport and forced him into early retirement.
In June of 2026 Casillas appeared before the Porto Labor Court to provide testimony on how he has been affected by the aftermath of the heart attack. Reports say that he can no longer run due to the attack and can only walk short distances. Casillas also reportedly receives daily treatment to prevent future issues.

Why Is Casillas Seeking €3.7 Million?
Casillas is suing for around €3.7 million for work-related permanent incapacity.
Casillas claims that his heart attack was caused by exercising during training with Porto. As such he argues that he should be compensated due to his inability to continue his career as a professional athlete.
FC Porto and its insurer are fighting back against the claim. The insurer argues that Casillas had high cholesterol levels that could have been a cause of the heart attack. It has also said that they paid out €1.5 million which is the limit of coverage under the workers accident policy.
Porto has said that they continued to pay Casillas his full wages while he was recovering.

A Battle With Big Implications for Players
This case isn’t just about millions of euros. It highlights a growing concern for players in regards to long-term health implications of career-ending incidents.
Casillas has taken the opportunity to not only seek compensation but to try and hold those at fault accountable for professional risks that players take.
