Why Ranveer Singh’s Exit From Don 3 Has Sparked a Major Bollywood Industry Clash

Ever since Ranveer Singh reportedly walked away from Don 3 earlier this year, a significant rift has apparently opened up between him and director Farhan Akhtar, culminating in a public dispute with the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE), a major Indian film union.
The feud is currently creating headlines as Bollywood’s latest major industry clash of 2026.
The drama began as news broke that Ranveer Singh pulled out of the much-awaited Don sequel leaving the production team in shambles. However, it has since spiralled into something more than just an actor replacing another for a film role.

According to several reports, the producer’s decision to move past Ranveer Singh and cast another actor for Don 3 has now sparked debate over contracts, responsibility, and hierarchy in Bollywood.
Reports claimed Excel Entertainment, Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s production company, issued a legal notice to FWICE after Ranveer Singh “dropped out” of Don 3 weeks before they were set to shoot for the film internationally. Ranveer Singh’s exit from Don 3 was “reported when mass pre-production work was over” including location scouting abroad, hotel bookings, flights, etc. for over 200 crew members, Excel Entertainment stated.

“Apart from financial loss, FWICE President said there has been a setback to the film’s production schedule,” adding that the production house “estimates losses to be around Rs 45 crores.”
The president of FWICE also claimed Ranveer Singh met with the director to discuss script details, conduct a recce, and approved posters of Don 3.

Following FWICE’s boycott call against Ranveer Singh, union representatives accused the actor of refusing to meet with them in person despite receiving notices from FWICE. “We have taken the strict decision to protect producers, technicians and thousands of workers who will suffer if films aren’t made,” FWICE President BN Tiwari added.

Actor Ranveer Singh responded to the boycott call later that day through a statement on social media. While denying any misconduct towards the union or film industry, Ranveer Singh’s press release stated that he “refuses to comment on the matter publicly” out of respect and because he believes the issue can be solved “professionally, with dignity, maturity and mutual respect.”
“I have the utmost regard for everyone who has been a part of the DON franchise and wish the best for the film,” he added.

News of Bollywood’s latest feud has caused widespread discussion as Don 3 was highly anticipated to be one of Bollywood’s biggest films in the franchise genre in years. Ranveer Singh’s inclusion in the Don franchise already had people talking when he was initially announced to replace Shah Rukh Khan.
Many Bollywood insiders speculate that Ranveer Singh vs. FWICE controversy will set a precedent for contracts in the Indian film industry, particularly when working on films with big budgets, extensive crews, and shooting locations abroad. Others are curious to see if the actor will be affected by FWICE’s ban when promotional or release windows open up for his films and endorsements in the future.
Don 3 controversy hasn’t been settled yet, but it’s safe to say that it’s one of the biggest Bollywood news stories so far this year.
